Microsoft’s Idea behinds it’ cooperation. GSoC progress….

June 15, 2007

With Microsoft working deals with many different companies it makes me wonder what he (the microsoft corporate entity) is doing.

Take a look at what Linux is today, vibrant and powerful, even with all the problems it has today. Namely, not alot of hardware manufacturers work with us. We help eachother by growing together even though we are seporate distrobutions. Many programs are created by a company that runs an os. Like Ubuntu programmers from Canonical. Novell, and Suse, and many others some more distantly connected, some companies are the reason the OS exists. But even with that, we are sharing our technology and programs with each other. Many times they work very well together.

I have always bragged that linux is something Microsoft can’t seem to fight. They can’t buy it, they can’t produce it or accept our software, and many other reasons.  But no I think they ahve found a whole.

Novell made the deal to make  there software work better with windows, xandros has said the same thing.  And linspire made it very clear by telling us that they will provide binary only support for commercial OS.  Mediaplayer support, amongs some others.

When all the technology that is being release for linux it creates a wider and wider gap between software that works between closed and open.  And eventually makes a software that works only with binary software.  And that technology CAN’T be shared with others.  They made a deal not to share it.  They can’t put the media player 10 support in ubuntu.  They can’t put dvd codecs in ubuntu.  Because they are binary only.  People can’t sell linux anymore without asking permission or stricking a deal with the owners of the software.

Microsoft is slowly pulling one man after another from our powerful Linux ship at a time and telling them to keep a secret.  Eventually this will cause dissension.  We will start to fight amongst each other about new things.  Instead of KDE vs Gnome, or Emacs vs Vi.  We get coporate questions like, who as the best technology, who has the best intellectual rights?  Who struck a deal with who to get the right to play that “video” or “audio”.

We are then devided, what we don’t want, because of the same things that has keeps technolgoy from being shared by all the other closed source software.  Microsoft wants to devide us to conqure us.  That is what they are doing with these deals.  At least that’s what I see.

“AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT…”

I have been working hard on the XML format that all my PyStart Books and lessons are made in.  I have created a treeview widget that takes all the contents from the book directory and can then look in each “book” for the chapters/lessons within it.  I was surprised how well I was able to do it.  I was asking Pete last night for some help.  He wasn’t able to help because he was busy.  I then jsut started tweaking and I figured it all out myself!

Feels good!
