945 Chipsets rock when they are fixed :P

When I purchased my computer I had a lot of experience with Linux and various hardware that are compatible and not with Linux.  I came to the choice to go with a system that is entirely open source and not have to worry about special half working drivers from companies.  I guess I have become spoiled with the fact that I don’t have to download special drivers with Linux anymore.  I went with the Asus A7F.  A great Intel everything computer.  I went with the Intel everything because, if you don’t know yet, intel LOVES the Linux world, and try to support it as much as they can. (I guess that is what happens when you get your hand bitten enough times from Microsoft. :P)

Anyway, to make a long story shorter, the graphics card and the wide screen display didn’t play well with each other.  After following the 915resolution instructions found here :http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=326864&highlight=945GM I was able to get everything working perfectly.  Thanks guys… your did a great job…

One thing I would point out is that you don’t have to install the newest driver.  It should work just fine without that.  Why don’t I use the newer driver?  Well first, the old one isn’t broken for me, so why fix it… and second, if you stay with the built in driver updates are automatic and stable for a long period.  If I install that driver, then with ever kernel or xorg update I have to reinstall the driver.  Bleh… I am WAY to lazy for that.

Rumor has it that the next release of Ubuntu has this whole widescreen issue tackled hard.  Fingers crossed for that one.

So for anyone considering a new lappy… go everything Intel from the graphics to the wireless.  And your should do just fine in linux.

Thanks Intel for truly supporting Linux.
